The 2013 Super Bowl was a great game with lots of juicy drama and almost epic comebacks... but it also gave fans a lot to talk about when it came to the worst commercials of the night. As a full-service ad agency, we're not short on opinions. Here are three ads that we think rubbed fans the wrong way.
Calvin Klein
We know that the Super Bowl halftime show was going to feature Beyonce, which meant that there was going to be a higher female audience. However, that doesn't mean that Calvin Klein has to show a male model in nothing but underwear for what seemed to be forever. This commercial made most of the male audience squemish. While Calvin Klein did trend on twitter for a short while, this ad received a lot of social media backlash and also finished close to the bottom on USA Today's Ad Meter.
Budweiser Black Crown
Anheuser-Busch announced its new beer, Budweiser Black Crown, with two Super Bowl advertisements. Both were dull, dark, and a little creepy. Most beer commercials showed fun people having a fun time along with why their beer was the best. Budweiser's ads were more focused on what kind of people should drink Black Crown.
Most of America is not "Trendy McTrend". Having young, upscale talent in dark clothing doesn't appeal to many Super Bowl viewers in terms of why they should drink a certain beer.
The USA Today ad meter ranked both of these commercials in the bottom five. It's pretty clear that Super Bowl viewers want to see beer and fun living together, not a dark room with a dark man on a dark night.
Go Daddy
Go Daddy always tries to combine sexiness and humor to generate a reaction. The Washington Post called this commercial sexist and also stated this commercial was cruel towards unattractive people. The USA Today ad meter listed the make-out session as the worst Super Bowl ad this year.
